What is Equine Assisted Therapy?

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) incorporates horses experientially to assist people to explore their mental health and behavioural issues through self-discovery.

It is a collaborative effort between a licensed therapist and a horse professional working with the clients and horses to address treatment goals.

EAP is experiential in nature.

This means that the session is directed by what the client is experiencing in the here and now, allowing the client to have control on their treatment goal.

Why Choose Equine Assisted Therapy?

It is my experience that a lot of people find it hard to express their feelings in a counselling room. This can be the case when people have been let-down by other humans in the past, resulting in the client building internal defence mechanisms to protect themselves. This is where Equine Therapy comes into play.

We incorporate horses into mental health treatment for people. As prey animals, horses respond to nonverbal messages, even unconsciousness, and their responses often remind clients of their goals, personal challenges, or relationships with themselves and others.

This provides a safe environment to work through those relationships, where the horses only change when we do.

Horses are experts at picking up emotion and atmosphere

as these are the skills that have kept them alive for thousands of years.

A horse will simply react to the energy it feels from you without judgement or having a hidden agenda. This gives the person a chance to look at their behaviour or actions in a non-threatening or judgemental way giving the person a lot more room to change.

Benefits of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

The focus of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is ground-based, with no horse-riding involved. This allows the client to focus on their inner self without external influence.

Non-verbal communication, assertiveness, creative thinking, problem-solving, leadership skills, taking responsibility, teamwork, relationships, confidence, and attitude are several examples of the objectives people present with.

EAP is a powerful and effective therapeutic approach

that has an incredible impact on individuals, youth, famlies, and groups.

EAP addresses a variety of mental health and human development needs including:

behavioural issues, attention deficit disorder, PTSD, substance abuse, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, relationship problems and communication needs.

Feedback

Joe is one of 10-12 qualified Eagala Therpist in Ireland, based in Ballina North Tipperary we have worked with Joe and Niamh since we started our programmes.

When working with young people it is important to have patience, to be knowledgeable and to have a sense of humour. Joe had all these qualities in abundance. However, Joe’s most indelible attribute was the way he treated our children with respect. He respected their need for space, their privacy and the difficulties and life experiences they were bringing each week. He treated them with compassion to their individual circumstances while also motivated and encouraging them to go beyond their own expectations of themselves. Joe has positively impacted on the lives of our young people who completed his programme and has equipped them with certain skills to help themselves cope with the pressures they face daily and for that we will forever be indebted to him and his team.
